PETALING JAYA — Social media is abuzz with a video purportedly of a brand new Proton X70 catching fire.

In the short clip, a voice could be heard saying that the car still had its plastic seat covers on.

The vehicle also bore trade plates indicating that it was a new car yet to be registered.

It is believed that the incident happened at a Puspakom outlet in Alor Gajah, Melaka.

The clip was shared by @nanmanjoi8715 on Twitter.

As of press time, it is not known what caused the sports utility vehicle (SUV) to catch fire. Proton has yet to issue a statement to address the matter.

One Twitter user mentioned that the X70 has been in the market for quite a while now which could indicate that this fire was not a design flaw.

The X70 was launched in June 2022 and this is possibly the first time a video has gone viral of the car catching fire.

However, this is not the first time a Proton X series vehicle has caught fire. Previously, the carmaker clarified that an X90 that caught fire was not because the vehicle's 48v hybrid battery had exploded, as speculated.

Following an investigation, Proton said the fire was caused by a grounding connection. They also recalled the cars for safety inspection. — The Vibes, October 12, 2023
