MIRI – A Toyota Hilux with three people inside plunged from a road at the top of a ravine into a lake in rural Tatau district in northern Sarawak, killing everyone inside.

The victims included a 5-year-old Indonesian boy named Hidayat.

The other two were Sarawakian adults Dominic Serang, 33, and Robin Kehing, 34.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department confirmed the identities of the deceased.

It said that the tragedy happened late yesterday afternoon at Simpang Pelugau in Tatau which is about 300km south of Miri city.

“The three were inside their Hilux travelling past Simpang Pelugau when their vehicle plunged off the ravine and into a lake below.

“The fire station in Tatau received an emergency alert from the public and deployed rescuers to the site which required timber loggers’ transports to reach.

“Rescuers found the boy trapped inside the vehicle that had sunk into the lake,” it said in a statement.

“The bodies of the two men were found by divers at the bed of the lake.”

The rescue teams had to use an excavator to pull the vehicle out of the lake.

All the bodies were handed over to police at about 5pm.

How the truck had plunged into the watery ravine is still the subject of an investigation. – The Vibes, October 20, 2023
