KUALA LUMPUR – PKR has never been a member of the international organisation known as Liberal International, clarified Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is the party’s president.

Anwar, who is the Pakatan Harapan MP for Tambun, said that he hopes the issue will not be politicised.

He urged MPs who asked about this alleged relationship to check for themselves on the matter.

He explained that the party was an associate member but had decided to disengage from the organisation due to its contentious stands such as supporting homosexual privileges and Israel.

“We were initially an associate but because some of their decisions, including recognising lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) and the stand of (supporting) Israel, we did not become members,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

He said this in the Dewan Rakyat today during question time for ministers, in reply to a supplementary question by Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (Pasir Mas-PN) today.

Fadhli had sought an explanation on whether PKR was ever a member of the organisation, which expresses support for Israel.

Two days ago, PKR communication head Fahmi Fadzil had said that the name and logo of the party were no longer on the website of Liberal International after it was pointed out that PKR was not a member.

He said PKR was mulling legal action against some quarters linking it to the organisation.

Based on feedback from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, there were more than 200 Liberal International-related content used to attack Anwar.

“So there is a coordinated behaviour. This is a political attack, and it’s important that I explain that factually PKR is not a member of Liberal International. So, stop all the slander and lies,” Fahmi, who is also communications and digital minister, had said. – The Vibes, November 7, 2023
