NATIONAL mixed doubles player, Toh Ee Wei has expressed her disappointment following criticism from netizens regarding her inconsistent performance with Chen Tang Jie, to the point where some were even willing to criticise her parents with abusive words.
Ee Wei, who is also a world champion with Tang Jie, admitted that comments like 'why are there children like this' really hurt her family's feelings, even though she herself tried to accept the criticism with an open heart.
"For me, I'm okay. But my parents are sad; they took care of me until I grew up, which was not easy.
"When people say things like that, it's really unpleasant to hear," she said as reported by Berita Harian.
Ee Wei revealed that she received many messages of criticism from netizens on social media following her defeat in the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Open last week and the first round of the Indian Open yesterday.
"Before that, I had already received a lot of criticism, but I didn't care. I just wanted to focus on doing my best," she said.
Meanwhile, Ee Wei denied claims that she was angry or dissatisfied with Tang Jie in court, instead explaining her serious expression as a sign of focus when fighting her opponent.
"I entered the court to be serious. I wanted to fight my opponent, not to show off for outsiders. There was no problem in our communication, our relationship is okay," she explained.
Admitting that her confidence level had dropped slightly after the Malaysian Open, Ee Wei said that her current performance had not reached the best level like when she won the previous world title.
"Now we really need to find our rhythm of play. We can't always play at our best. What's important is that the process and development are there," she said.
Despite the criticism she received, Ee Wei insisted that she chose to remain positive, train as usual and continue to fight for the country.
"You have to have a strong heart when you enter the court. We cannot control the external pressure. What I want is, I want to fight for the country and make my parents proud," she added. – January 16, 2026
