LIVERPOOL – Liverpool principal owner John W. Henry has broken his silence over the Reds’ withdrawal from the European Super League (ESL) after he addressed supporters, Jurgen Klopp and his players, apologising and vowing “our work isn’t done”.
FSG received furious backlash from supporters after Liverpool were confirmed as one of the 12 founding members of the new breakaway ESL a few days ago.
This morning, the club issued a statement saying that Liverpool are withdrawing from the ESL with rivals - Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester United following suit.
Henry, through a short video, apologised for the ‘disruption’ caused by his ESL plan and admitted that he did not consult or inform people from the club before pushing forward with the plan.
“I want to apologise to all the fans and supporters of Liverpool Football Club for the disruption I caused over the past 48 hours,” Henry said.
“It goes without saying, but should be said, that the project put forward was never going to stand without the support of the fans. No one ever thought differently in England.
“Over these 48 hours, you were very clear that it would not stand. We heard you. I heard you.
“And I want to apologise to Jurgen, to Billy (Hogan, CEO), to the players and to everyone who works so hard at LFC to make our fans proud,” he said. – Agencies, April 21, 2021.
