KUALA LUMPUR – The Star has apologised to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and its council members for the negative connotations and embarrassment caused by its article entitled “Do we need SOP to prevent another kind of virus from weakening Malaysian sports?” published on Feb 27.
The piece, which touched on questionable spending in the sports arena during the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, questioned why BAM sold one of its properties in Taman Maluri, Cheras for RM52 million.
“Why the urgency? Wouldn’t they have made more money if they had waited for the economic situation to get better?” said the article.
A defamation suit was filed on April 8 by Datuk Goh Chee Keong and Datuk V. Subramaniam, the secretary-general and treasurer of the BAM, respectively.
The Star has acknowledged there was a vague basis for its insinuations and regretted not giving more space to BAM’s side of the story in the said article. – The Vibes. June 5, 2021
