KUALA LUMPUR - The Sports Commissioner (PJS) has set up a task force involving the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Federation (PSM) and representatives of a coalition of 11 new members or ‘G11’ to end the crisis plaguing the national governing body.
The PJS, in a statement today, said all parties would cooperate in carrying out reforms for the benefit and continued development of the sport of sepak takraw and, thus, ensure PSM would be re-admitted as an affiliate of the Asian Sepak Takraw Federation (ASTAF).
“The cooperation and spirit of teamwork are very much necessary for providing the foundation for the governance of the national governing body with integrity, transparency and fairness so as to restore the confidence of sepak takraw enthusiasts and the people towards this heritage sport,” said the statement.
According to the PJS, the decision was reached through a joint discussion with PSM and G11 representatives on Wednesday that was held online and in a harmonious environment.
On May 20, ASTAF expelled PSM from the parent body with immediate effect following former PSM president Datuk Seri Ahmad Ismail’s action as ASTAF’s deputy president in sending a letter to the Olympic Council of Asia and the International Olympic Committee on Feb 24.
He was also found guilty of breaching the written undertakings given to the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF) and ASTAF on March 14, 2008 which is “to support ISTAF and ASTAF to establish and maintain efficient administration of the federation”.
This resulted in 11 state associations pulling out from PSM, saying they had lost faith in his leadership.
The PJS said that all parties had unanimously agreed that the settlement measures should be orderly and in accordance with the processes based on legislation and the constitution; namely the Sports Development Act 1997 (Act 576), the PSM Constitution and the ASTAF Constitution.
At the same time, the PSM and G11 also agreed with the remedial steps formulated by the PJS and that these should be implemented immediately to achieve the goal.
Meanwhile, the PJS will continue to perform its responsibilities as an intermediary to PSM and G11, ready to provide advice and guidance especially on improving the constitution, the structure of the highest committee as well as constantly monitor the progress of the remedial process together with PSM and G11. - Bernama.
