KUALA LUMPUR - In January mixed martial arts (MMA) fans worldwide were shocked to see a docile and respectful Conor McGregor ahead of his bout with Donald Cerrone.
Fans wondered if McGregor would maintain this new persona in his second fight against Dustin Poirier, and McGregor was indeed so and docile.
But supporters cheered McGregor's return to his 'notorious' ways ahead of his next bout with Poirier.
During a press conference yesterday, McGregor was seen taunting Poirier whom he's to fight tomorrow morning (Malaysia time), that had the crowd worked up.
While it may seem like the Irish-bred fighter is merely trying to sell the fight, it may well be a strategy in anticipation of tomorrow's fight.
Loud eccentric fighters like McGregor do not only sell fights with their personality, but also attempt to win 'the war of the minds' with their opponents.
An opponent who reacts emotionally to McGregor, could also be emotional as opposed to being tactical.
All said and done, regardless, Conor is a tactical fighter - the question simply is, will his tactics be enough.
When McGregor lost to Poirier, many attributed his defeat on his dependance in taking a boxing stance that made his leg an open target.
Poirier took full advantage and successfully chopped away with brutal kicks which made the Irish fighter less mobile.
This time it's uncertain whether McGregor will return to the karate-like stance he used during his earlier fighting days.
But one thing's for sure, McGregor is aware that his main weapon - his left cross - may be ineffective against Poirier.
Thus, McGregor can be expected to use his left strikes as bait to create openings for a fight-ending uppercut.
McGregor is set to face Poirier tomorrow at UFC 264, which begins at 10am (Malaysian time). - The Vibes, July 10, 2021
