IT was a case of a prank when Canadian Olympic cyclist Kelsey Mitchell posted a video of alarms going off when she passed through security screening in Tokyo.
The athlete who made heads turn during the Games just had to do it one last time before returning home.
The culprit was her gold medal which she had hidden under her shirt while walking through a metal detector. Once the alarm got set off, the 27-year-old pulled out her bling and was met with nothing but laughter and applause, proclaiming herself as a comedian.
The Alberta native's gold in the women’s individual cycling sprint was Canada’s final medal of the Tokyo Olympics.
Mitchell’s win also made her the second Canadian woman to ever capture gold in an individual cycling event, joining 2004 champion Lori-Ann Muenzer.
But Mitchell wasn’t always a cyclist.
Having had given soccer a go before her desire to compete at the Olympics made her take up cycling. She eventually made the national team.
2019 was a breakthrough year for her as she won two medals at the Pan American Games in the summer and went one further in September by winning three medals at the Pan American Championships where she set a world record in the 200 metre sprint.
Now Mitchell has added an Olympic gold medal to her resume, as well as the title of comedian thanks to her security stunt. - Agencies. August 28, 2021
