SOUTH Africa is again seeking to become part of the Formula One calendar as officials have registered an interest in bringing back the sport.
The Kyalami circuit last hosted an F1 race in 1993 after having been a mainstay on the calendar since the 1960s.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has confirmed this after having said earlier this year that getting Africa back is very important for the future of F1.
Discussions are currently ongoing to fine tune the necessary requirements while other countries in Africa too have registered an interest.
A leaked draft of the 2022 calendar has revealed a record 23 races have been pencilled in to take place next season with sweeping rule changes taking effect.
Miami is the latest to be confirmed as a venue next year and the race has been slated for May 8.
Domenicali has been wanting to expand further into the United States and this is the first step.
Likewise, Domenicali had spoken before about spreading out the calendar to make it a more global championship, at the expense of some more “traditional” venues in Europe.
“How many do we want in Europe, in America, in the Middle East, in Asia and the Far East? I can see fewer GPs in Europe, more in the US and more in the Middle East and Asia,” he told GQ Magazine in an interview from July.
