KUALA LUMPUR – World number seven shuttler Lee Zii Jia advances to the next round of the All England Championship after winning against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto 21-16, 21-17.
Last year’s All England champion Zii Jia took the first set in 21 minutes despite Nishimoto’s best efforts to catch up.
Starting strong in the second set, the national top player triumphed and secured his win to advance to the round of 16 tomorrow.
Zii Jia had won three of the four previous encounters between the two, with the last win coming at the 2019 BWF World Championships.
Meanwhile, veteran shuttler Daren Liew won his first round match against Frenchman Toma Junior Popov 21-15, 21-19 and will face Taiwan’s Chou Tien-Chen tomorrow.
Eleventh seed men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi defeated Callum Hemming-Steven Stallwood of England 21-14, 21-12 and play Bagas Maulana-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia in the round of 16.
World number seven duo Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik made it through to the round of 16 after winning against Scottish pair Christopher Grimley-Matthew Grimley 21-14, 21-19.
Women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan go up against Japan’s Kie Nakanishi-Rin Iwanaga tomorrow after beating Brazil’s Jaqueline Lima-Samia Lima 21-8, 21-12.
Mixed doubles pairing of Ong Yew Sin-Goh Liu Ying beat Callum Hemming-Jessica Pugh of England 17-21, 21-17, 21-11.
World number 10 team of Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing won against neighbours Adnan Maulana-Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso of Indonesia 21-14, 13-21, 21-16 and will meet Thai shuttlers Supak Jomkoh-Supissara Paewsampran in the next round.
Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See also made it through to the round of 16 after beating India’s Venkat Gaurav Prasad-Juhi Dewangan 21-9, 21-13 and play against Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti tomorrow.
Unfortunately, men’s doubles winners of the German Open Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will be heading home after losing against He Ji Ting-Tan Qiang of China 15-21, 21-19, 11-21.
Following their exit is duo Tan Kian Meng-Tan Wee Kiong, who were defeated by England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy 14-21, 20-22.
Man Wei Chong-Kai Vun Tee lost against fourth seed Japanese pair Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi 17-21, 21-18, 21-23.
Women’s doubles pair Lim Chiew Sien-Vivian Hoo also failed to beat South Korea’s third seed Kong Haeyong-Kim Soyeong, losing 9-21, 12-21.
