KUALA LUMPUR – Amir Amirul Azhar and Wee Ming Hock created history for Kelantan today after winning the 20th Malaysian Games (Sukma) men’s squash doubles gold medal at the National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil.

The pair defeated Kedah pair Hafiz Zhafri Abdul Harif-Ong Sai Hung in three sets, winning the tie 11-9, 5-11, 11-9.

“At the 2018 Sukma in Perak, we could not deliver a medal for Kelantan. We are proud of today’s win. It boosts our confidence to compete in other competitions moving forward,” said Amir after the event.

Amir-Ming Hock, both national players, played together as a pair in a major tournament for the first time.

“We had no expectations. We followed the techniques from our training and focused on giving our best,” Ming Hock added.

Meanwhile, Negri Sembilan’s Darren Pragasam-Sanjay Jeeva defeated teammates Ameeshenraj Chandaran-Shamiel Haeyzad Sharulhisam to secure the bronze medal. The pair won 11-10, 11-9.

In the women’s doubles, Kedah’s Aifa-Aira Azman clinched the gold medal after defeating Sabah pair Lai Wen Li-Yee Xin Ying in straight sets, 11-10, 11-9.

The sister duo had only played as partners for the first time today in a major tournament.

Aifa said she was excited to be partnering with her younger sister, as they have good chemistry.

“We only started training together last week, so I am glad that we managed to win the gold.

“I had to miss out on the women’s singles event because of my right thumb injury. I did not want to risk it, and of course I do not regret my decision to skip,” she said.

Today’s win is Aifa’s third Sukma gold medal, as she won her first and second in the women’s singles and team events in Ipoh in 2018.

At the same time, Kuala Lumpur’s Noor Ainaa Amani Ampadi-Chan Yiwen defeated Kedah’s Wong Heng Wai-K.Sehveetraa to secure the bronze medal in straight sets, 11-3,11-5. – The Vibes, September 23, 2022
