KUALA LUMPUR – True wealth is not defined by the amount of money we have, but the state of our wellness instead, said Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Santhara Kumar.
He explained that a healthy society is the backbone of the country as they go about their daily lives with minimal interruption.
“When we talk about wealth, everybody talks about dollars and cents, but the real true wealth comes from our wellness.
“Many are locked onto their screens nowadays and not finding the right balance with other healthy activities,” he said during the launch of the KL Wellness City Fitness Challenge organised by the healthcare-based integrated mixed development township KL Wellness City in collaboration with XS Elite Performance today.
The inaugural Fitness Challenge event, taking place on December 11 in Bukit Jalil, is an obstacle race featuring five crossfit challenges, putting participants’ mental, emotional, and physical capabilities to the test.
Santhara added that such a programme is an example of how society could jump on the chance to get back on board an active and healthy lifestyle, whilst promoting sports tourism in Malaysia, which should be emulated by other organisations.
“This type of programme can be coordinated by more organisations, perhaps as part of their corporate social responsibility initiative.
“When I was the Federal Territories deputy minister, we looked forward to engaging with companies because it would also entice tourists to participate in our events.
“Wellness programme is one of many products that could market Malaysia continuously that attracts different demographics and target audience,” he added.

Meanwhile, KL Wellness City branding, sales, and marketing executive director Datuk Seri Vincent Tiew said unlike any other developer, they wished to be at the forefront of promoting wellness through various activities.
Other than the Fitness Challenge, they have also been conducting free weekly workout classes for the public held at the KL Wellness City Gallery.
“We wanted to create and offer more recreational activities and health talks from time to time to advocate a better living lifestyle.
“We are not only building hospitals, being a healthcare developer, but we also are not a typical property developer.
“We take the approach of being at the forefront of promoting wellness living rather than just incorporating the product or the project and calling it wellness-related,” he said at the press conference.
Tiew added they are expecting a total of 500 participants to register for the obstacle race.
It is available in three categories: junior for 16-19 years old; open for 30-44 years old; and master for 45 years old and above – male and female, respectively.
