KUALA LUMPUR – Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin has been elected as one of the five Asean Football Federation (AFF) Council members for the 2022-2026 term.
FAM said in a statement today that Chris Nikou of Australia, Viphet Sihachakr (Laos), Ko Ko Thein (Myanmar) and Thanasak Suraprasert (Thailand) were the others elected as council members at the 29th AFF Congress in Siem Reap, Cambodia today.
Meanwhile, Major General Khiev Sameth was returned unopposed as president for a second term, after winning unopposed in 2019 to replace the late Sultan Ahmad Shah, who stepped down due to health factors then.
Hamidin was elected as one of three vice-presidents in March 2019, but he relinquished the post a month later, citing his decision to focus on his responsibilities as a committee member of the Asian Football Confederation.
“We hope for closer cooperation among AFF member nations under the leadership of Sameth so that the AFF can help their affiliates raise the standard of football in the Southeast Asian region.
“With my election, I will continue to ensure Malaysia’s voice is always heard in the region.
“I have my reasons for not contesting a higher post because what is important to me is Malaysia,” said Hamidin.
Also present at the congress were FAM deputy president Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi and FAM secretary-general Noor Azman Rahman.
