KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wished the national hockey squad good luck ahead of their 2023 Hockey World Cup campaign in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, India.

He expressed confidence that the team coached by A. Arul Selvaraj, who will start their Group C action against the Netherlands this evening, will be able to show their best performance and pull off an upset against the higher-ranked opponents.

“I and all Malaysians wish the Speedy Tigers success. Hopefully, all will go well throughout the tournament. Let the name of the country shine on the world stage!” he said in a post on his Facebook today.

After the clash against the Oranje, the Speedy Tigers are scheduled to meet Chile on Monday and New Zealand on January 19.

This is Malaysia’s ninth appearance in the World Cup since its introduction in 1971 and their best achievement was winning fourth place in the 1975 edition which Malaysia hosted. – Bernama, January 14, 2023
