KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi booked their spot in the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) semi-finals after upsetting top-seeded Indonesian duo Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto 22-20, 21-15 today.
The Indonesians were stunned in the first set, dropping their first game of the tournament, and the eighth-seeded Malaysian duo wasted no time to close out the match in straight sets, taking 37 minutes at the Al Nasr Club in Dubai.
Having won four of their previous 11 meetings, the win comes as payback for the Malaysian duo after the Indonesians knocked them out of the Malaysia Open quarter-finals earlier this year.
In the semi-finals tomorrow, they will face either Japan’s Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi or Muhammad Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana from Indonesia.
They will join mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai in the next round, as the professional pair face top-seeds Zheng Si Wei-Huang Yaqiong from China for a shot at the finals on Sunday.
The eighth-seeded mixed doubles team eliminated Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 21-17, 15-21, 21-19 earlier today in the quarter-finals. – The Vibes, April 28, 2023
