KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles team Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun will be making their first appearance at a Super 500 tournament final after winning against Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin 21-17, 22-20 at the 2023 Malaysia Masters.

In the semi-finals match at the Axiata Arena, the 26th seed Malaysian pair maintained their early lead to gain the advantage heading into the second set.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the second set as the lead kept changing hands with the ninth ranked Indonesians trying to stay in the game and force the rubber set.

“The second set was close towards the end because the lead kept changing hands.

“The nerves began to set in but we just focused on getting the shuttle across the net, while also hoping that our opponents would make a mistake,” said Wei Chong-Kai Wun.

With the Masters being their fourth competition on home soil, the two-time Super 300 winners said entering a Super 500 final is a breakthrough in their career.

“It feels good because it is our first Super 500 final, before this we always lost in the first or second round.

“During the Malaysia Open and Masters last year, we did not perform well because we felt the pressure of playing at Axiata Arena.

“But since then, we have gotten more experience from playing in other tournaments, so this time we just enjoyed our game and did our best on the court,” they added.

In the finals tomorrow, Wei Chong-Kai Wun will play South Koreans Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae for the first time.

They will be joining women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah in the finals after the world number 11 pair defeated South Koreans Jeong Na-eun-Kim Hye-jeong earlier today. – The Vibes, May 27, 2023
