SAUDI Arabia’s top religious authority has called on soldiers to be prepared to lay down their lives fighting the Iran-backed Houthis until the group is driven from power, in a rare and strongly worded message issued as violence between the sides escalates.
Grand Mufti Sheikh Saleh bin Fawzan Al-Fawzan addressed troops stationed along the kingdom’s borders in a statement carried by Saudi state media, drawing heavily on Quranic verses and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad on sacrifice and the defence of Islam.
Reuters reported on Friday that the message came after weeks of escalating violence, with the Houthis launching repeated missile and drone attacks towards Saudi Arabia and Riyadh responding with air strikes.
“Protecting this great nation and punishing anyone who seeks to lay a hand on even an inch of its territory are among the greatest duties and most virtuous acts of devotion, for which lives and souls may be sacrificed in seeking God’s pleasure,” Al-Fawzan said.
He also described restoring the authority of Yemen’s internationally recognised, Saudi-backed government across the country as one of the kingdom’s most pressing obligations.
“We ask God Almighty to grant all of you support, protect our country and beloved Yemen from all evil, and bring an end to the Houthi group and those who assist and support it,” the statement said.
The Grand Mufti urged troops on the front line to remain prepared to carry out their duties, obey the rulers and military commanders, and execute their orders.
“You are following in the footsteps of the Prophet’s companions, defending the holy sites of Muslims,” the statement said.
The religious message adds a religious dimension to Saudi Arabia’s response to an intensifying conflict that has also raised concerns over the security of the kingdom’s energy infrastructure and regional shipping routes.
The Houthis claimed missile and drone attacks on Riyadh last week, while Saudi authorities said a ballistic missile aimed at the capital was intercepted. - September 25, 2026
