BEIJING – From sleep to socialising, students make sacrifices to ace examinations, but one at a university here went much further – by chopping off his “member”.

Chinese media outlets reported that the third-year student took a knife to his genitals in a bathroom at the Beijing University of Technology, hoping to rid himself of sexual desires so that he could better focus on his studies and realise his goal of entering graduate school.

After castrating himself, however, he panicked and called police.

When help arrived, he was immediately sent to hospital for emergency treatment.

The student “still has a chance to recover”, said the varsity.
