MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday signed into law a bill allowing him to hold the top office for another two terms, reported the Sputnik news agency.
He has held the post since 2012, and previously from 1999 to 2008.
The bill also sets additional requirements for presidential nominees: citizens above 35 who have resided in Russia for at least 25 years, and never had citizenship of or a residence permit in another country.
The provision does not apply to Russians who “previously had the citizenship of a state that was adopted, or part of which was adopted, in the Russian Federation under federal constitutional law”.
Russia voted on several constitutional amendments last year.
Lawmakers are now updating existing legislation to ensure it is in line with the new version of the constitution. – Bernama, April 6, 2021
