MEXICO CITY – Authorities here have arrested another suspect in connection with the double murder of a French restaurateur and his business partner, officials said yesterday.

State police apprehended a 39-year-old man in the capital after following him on suspicions that he was “linked” to the murders, the local attorney-general’s office said in a statement.

Investigators believe that the killings of 45-year-old dual national Baptiste Lormand and his Mexican associate Luis Orozco last year were linked to the theft of expensive wine.

The bodies of the two men were found in the far south of the capital in November 2020, two days after Lormand was last seen in the affluent neighbourhood of Polanco where he ran a restaurant.

Authorities had previously announced the arrest of four other suspects in connection with the murders.

The violent killings sparked outrage among the capital’s French community, and dozens of people last year joined a march calling for justice.

Violent crime is a major problem in Mexico, which saw more than 34,500 murders last year, including 1,268 in the capital, according to the government. – AFP, April 18, 2021
