KUALA LUMPUR – The ringgit opened slightly lower against the US dollar today, due to the strengthening of the greenback as a safe-haven demand among investors.

There is concern about a foreign policy pivot after United States president-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday.

At 9.03am, the ringgit stood at 4.0450/0510 versus the US dollar, from 4.0350/0380 at Friday’s close.

The local note also fell when the government reimposed the movement control order in several states last Monday.

The ringgit depreciated 0.2% last week, falling to RM4.037 to the US dollar from RM4.029 the previous week. – Bernama, January 18, 2021
