KUALA LUMPUR – Former government advisor on public health Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood will be among the key speakers at this year’s Sustainable Brands Kuala Lumpur Conference (SB’22KL), which will be held virtually on June 21 and 22.

In a statement today, the conference organiser said Jemilah, who is executive director and a professor at the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, will deliver a talk titled Planetary Health: Towards a New Development Paradigm on the first day of the conference.

Jemilah previously served as a special adviser on public health matters to former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during his tenure from March 2020 to August 2021.

She was also a member of Malaysia’s Economic Action Council and played a prominent role in the country’s fight against Covid-19.

The organiser said several other top international and local experts will also be speaking at the conference, amid renewed global interest in the subject of sustainability against the backdrop of economic optimism following a prolonged Covid-19-induced slump.

A number of global brands, influential non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and social enterprises will also be sharing their innovations, learnings and best practices at the event.

This year’s conference will carry the theme Build Back Better – Learning from our Past in Designing a More Sustainable Future, with insight into the importance of sustainability in modern business practices, exploring social, environmental and financial considerations.

Sharmini Nagulan, who is the conference convenor and managing director of Acacia Blue, the country’s partner for Sustainable Brands, noted that this year’s theme will centre around the need to draw on past wisdom and the lessons to be learnt, both in terms of successes and failures.

“The recent pandemic has exposed deep fault lines in our global societies. As we return to ‘normalcy’, it is critical to slow down and connect the dots again. We need to relearn from the stories that have shaped our current reality, in order to write a better story of our future,” she said.
