KUALA LUMPUR – Touch ‘n Go (TNG) Group and Shell Malaysia expect 200 Shell stations nationwide will be equipped with the new cashless radio-frequency identification (RFID) solution for fuels by year-end.
TNG group chief executive officer Effendy Shahul Hamid said to date, the solution is available at 88 Shell stations nationwide.
“This new cashless fuelling experience is expected to increase twofold by the end of the year. We’re extremely pleased to have so quickly been able to expand the RFID use case beyond road tolling.
“Customers now can make payments at Shell stations without requiring any interaction with an app on their mobile phones or engage with a point-of-sale system as payment is made via TNG RFID,” he told reporters after the launch of the service here today.
Moving forward, he said both parties are planning to expand the RFID solution to 50% of Shell stations in Peninsular Malaysia within three years.
He said more than 22,000 TNG RFID users were opting for the RFID solution at Shell stations before its official launch and is a testament that the solutions brought effectiveness into the market.
Effendy said the combination of RFID in the e-wallet infrastructure allowed the company to explore its other use cases.
Shell General Manager Mobility for Malaysia and Singapore Seow Lee Ming said currently, only two TNG RFID bays were provided at each Shell station.
“If the adoption rate is high, as well as demand and traffic flow are good, we will have RFID solution extensions at all bays in our stations.
“Our focus is to enable more RFID users in more stations and then if there are any particular stations that have high traffic flow, we will expand more RFID-bays,” she said.
She said Shell Malaysia and TNG have a strong belief in the RFID solution based on the encouraging demand during its pilot project.
“In line with our commitment in making our customers’ daily journeys more seamless through innovation offerings using RFID technology, we went the extra mile to integrate TNG RFID with our loyalty partner BonusLink, allowing customers to earn loyalty points easily with each fuel purchase,” she said.
In order to use TNG RFID at Shell fuel stations, customers will need a TNG RFID linked to their TNG eWallet account and customers simply need to park their vehicles at the RFID-designated fuelling bays.
Vehicles are detected within seconds and payment will be auto-debited from the customer’s TNG eWallets. – Bernama, August 10, 2022
