KYLIE is back - and her new album Disco, released last Friday (November 6) entered the Official Charts at Number One. The album had the biggest opening week sales of any 2020 release in the UK so far, selling 55,000 units across streaming, CD, vinyl, downloads and a retro cassette edition.
The Australian pop princess is now the first female artist to have a number one album in the UK in five different decades. This is the eighth time the pop star has topped the Official Charts Company album rankings.
An eighth number one also means Minougue has now surpassed the likes of Sir Elton John, Sir Cliff Richard and George Michael, who also hold the most UK Number 1 albums.
It also makes her one of five other artists to ever share this achievement, alongside Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Paul Weller and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.
The 52-year-old singer took to social media to announce the news and to thank fans for their support.
“I am so grateful and overwhelmed. Disco is all yours and I LOVE that it is now in your hands, hearts and worlds!!!” the star wrote on Instagram.
Minogue’s first chart-topping release was her self-titled debut in 1988, followed by ‘Enjoy Yourself’ a year later. In 1992 her ‘Greatest Hits’ also landed at Number One, as well as 2001’s ‘Fever’, 2010’s ‘Aphrodite’, 2018’s ‘Golden’ and 2019’s ‘Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection’. – The Vibes, November 15, 2020
