SINGER and songwriter Solange Knowles will become the first black woman to compose music for the New York City Ballet.

In a statement on Monday, the NYCB said that Knowles, 36, will write a commissioned score for its Fall Fashion Gala. In conjunction with the gala's 10th anniversary, it will honour the ballet's vice-chair, Sarah Jessica Parker.

The as-yet-unnamed production will debut on September 28 at the Lincoln Centre in New York City and will feature choreography by Gianna Riesen.

Knowles shared the news on a social media platform on Tuesday, writing: “Very excited to announce i’ve composed an original score for the New York City Ballet".

Knowles, who is the younger sister of Beyoncé, won a Grammy in 2016 for best R&B performance for her single 'Cranes in the Sky'.

Her album of the same year, 'A Seat at the Table,' created four hits that made it to Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart. Her songs often reflect the experiences of black women, according to NBCBLK.

After its premiere during the Fashion Gala, the production will be staged later on October 1, 8, 11 and 16 and next year on May 2, 11, 13, 17 and 18. Tickets are priced from US$38 (about RM169.80) and are available on the New York City Ballet website. – The Vibes, August 17, 2022
