Malaysian director bags Best New Director at Golden Horse Awards

A MOVIE that was based on a true story at Gunung Keriang, Kedah in the 1980s won the Malaysia director the Best New Director award at the 57th Golden Horse Awards in Taipei, Taiwan on Saturday.

'The Story of Southern Islet' by Malaysian Chong Keat Aun was also in the running for Best Original Screenplay, reported The Star. Starring Season Chee, Pearlly Chua, Jojo Goh, Mei-Sim Hoon and Ling Tang, it tells the story of a wife’s search for a cure to her husband’s ailment. Her journey is riddled with strange encounters and otherworldly experiences.

In September, it won the Best Film award at the Istanbul Film Awards.

Other Malaysians honoured at the Golden Horse Awards was stylist Raymond Kuek, for Best Makeup and Costume Design in the Singaporean film ‘Number 1’. In receiving the award with film’s Singaporean director Ong Kuo Sin, he thanked his parents for giving birth to a “short but talented man”. ‘Number 1’ stars Mark Lee as a retrenched man who, in hard times, takes up work as a drag queen.

The Best Original Film Song award went to Malaysian songwriters Keon Chia and Hooi Yuan Teng for ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’, which they wrote with Singaporean Tan Boon Wah, for the film of the same title. The theme song is sang by Crowd Lu and actor Edward Chen.

Taiwanese romantic comedy ‘My Missing Valentine’ swept the awards with Best Film, Best Director for Chen Yu-hsun, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay.

The biggest individual winner was veteran Taiwanese actress Chen Shu-Fang, with Best Actress award in ‘Little Big Women’ and Best Supporting Actress award for ‘Dear Tenant’. – The Vibes, November 23, 2020
