The winners were announced during the ORIGIN Conference, an on-demand conference track about the latest developments in the Asia tech and startup scene, within TECHFEST Live x ROAD-TO-WCIT Malaysia 2020.

Close to 400 contenders from 18 countries across the Asia Pacific region participated.

Southeast Asia continued to be the most-represented region, with 67% of the applications, while East Asia emerged in the second spot with 23%, ahead of South Asia with 10%.

Started in May 2020, CloudTheatre is an online ticketed streaming platform for arts & culture shows.

Co-founded by Malaysian theatre practitioners William Yap and Dennis Lee, CloudTheatre’s innovative digital theatre has successfully brought the physical theatre experience online, by mimicking physical theatre experiences like front of house ticket checking, the lounge area, live chat, live voting, photo-booth, and post-show dialogue.

“Five months ago, we kick-started CloudTheatre with a clear objective of helping the performing arts industry by providing a platform for theatre groups to continue creating art while still generating income during the time of the pandemic.

“Today, we sold over 6,000 tickets to audiences from over 30 countries worldwide. We made a total of over RM200,000 payout to over 20 shows performed and streamed on CloudTheatre over the past few months,” says the co-founders of CloudTheatre, who are also actively taking part in theatre and musical shows in Malaysia.

“We feel extremely honoured and humbled to win the Startup Awards in the Media & Entertainment category.

“This is a huge assurance and encouragement for us to keep pushing through and innovating.

“We certainly hope that one day the platform will grow into an internationally recognised brand and one that will make Malaysians proud”.

CloudTheatre wants to take this opportunity to thank every audience member who has bought a ticket and watched a show on the platform, as well as to all organisers, producers, and directors for working closely to turn CloudTheatre from a humble dream into a reality on the global stage.

Watch out for more Malaysian-made arts and culture shows on www.cloudtheatres.com, especially this November & December.

There are up to 10 shows for audiences to enjoy at the comfort of their home, such as ‘NADIRAH ONLINE’, ‘One Minute To Midnight An Eco-musical’, ‘The Other Story of Ah-Q’, among others.
