MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M Saravanan has written to Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek to voice strong objections to any proposed reduction in Tamil language teaching hours in Tamil schools under the 2027 school curriculum restructuring.
The letter, which has also been extended to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, reflects the concerns shared by teachers, parents, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and the broader Indian community regarding the plan to cut Tamil language periods from 12 to 10 per week.
“I firmly object to reducing Tamil language teaching time from 12 periods to 10 periods per week under the 2027 curriculum restructure plan.
“Tamil schools remain the primary stronghold for safeguarding the heritage, cultural identity, and future sustainability of the Tamil language in Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

The Tapah MP said the Tamil language goes far beyond basic daily communication. It forms the essential foundation shaping a student's intellect, emotional growth, core values, and cultural foundation during their formative years.
Existing mother tongue teaching hours must not be compromised or sacrificed to make space for new subjects or syllabus modules, he said.
“While I fully support the MOE’s noble initiative to introduce a new Character Building module, I propose integrating its syllabus directly into existing Moral Education periods.
“This produces character building without reducing Tamil language class time.
“I urge the MOE to review its restructuring plan, maintain or increase the existing 12-period allocation for Tamil language in SJK(T), and guarantee that learning time remains fully protected,” he added. – November 5, 2026.
