NILAI – The Higher Education Ministry has confirmed that there will be no fee hike for students of tertiary-level institutions.

Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad said the ministry has also requested that universities not impose activity fees, as most students are not staying on campus amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“From the beginning, we’ve informed that there won’t be any increase in fees. The ministry also requested that varsities not charge students for other activities.

“But, this depends on each institution, as they have autonomy over tuition fees. I’ve learnt that some are providing discounts,” she told reporters here.

It was reported that a civil society group proposed that the ministry review higher education institution fees in view of the health crisis.

Noraini added that 30% of university lecturers nationwide have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

She also welcomed the Health Ministry’s efforts to vaccinate varsity students in Phase 3 of the national immunisation drive.

Lists of students and lecturers’ names have been submitted to the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force, she said.

“Lecturers in the high-risk group, including those in medical and dentistry faculties, have been vaccinated. The priority now are students staying on campus as they don’t have internet access (at home) to follow online lessons, as well as final-year students.” – Bernama, June 30, 2021
