[PHOTOS] Done and dusted, Malaysians have voted

KUALA LUMPUR – After two years of political turmoil following the Sheraton Move in February 2020, ousting Pakatan Harapan (PH) which was elected in 2018, Malaysians finally went to the polls in the 15th general election (GE15) last Saturday.

Despite concerns about monsoon season flooding, turnout was good with 70% of the total electorate coming out to vote at 4pm, about two hours before polling was due to end.

As of press time, the Election Commission has yet to provide the actual voter turnout number.

The GE15 electoral roll has 21,173,638 voters, and of that number, 20,905,366 who are ordinary voters, cast their ballots on Saturday. Another 146,737 voters who are army personnel and their spouses, as well as 118,794 police personnel, had voted on Tuesday, which was set aside for early voting.

From what The Vibes’ reporting team and visuals team saw, it was evident many had chosen to come out early on Saturday to cast their ballots, despite rainy weather in some areas. Many enthusiastic voters who came out early in the day included young people who voted for the first time. 

18 to 21-year-olds were able to vote in GE15 for the first time, along with new automatically registered voters. They add over six million more people to the 14 million on the electoral roll in 2018.

The results of GE15 are now out, and uncertain days lie ahead as Malaysians wait for a new government to be formed after results show that no coalition has the majority of seats in order to form a government by itself. 

But Malaysians can look back to November 19 and remember with pride that they fulfilled their civic duty.
