THE nation’s second oldest school, St Xavier’s Institution in Penang, has opened its historical heritage gallery to the public so they can better appreciate its legacy as one of the great educational institutions in the country.
The gallery will be open every Sunday from 10am until 1pm and, on other days, after 3.30pm by appointment (online enquiries can be made through [email protected]).
A token charge will be imposed as part of the school’s efforts to maintain the facility.
SXI, in a text message, said people can discover the illustrious journey of SXI through meticulously curated artefacts and captivating panels spanning over 3,400 square feet.
To sustain the school’s gallery and other facilities, SXI is also opening its doors to host both local and regional events at its sprawling grounds.
Besides a jazz performance at its Heah Joo Seang Hall, the school recently hosted the 17th South East Asian Pipe Band Championships.
The event ventured beyond the borders of Singapore for the first time and SXI stepped up to host the electrifying event.
The air was filled with the distinctive, stirring sounds of bagpipes and drums, creating a powerful auditory experience that resonated deeply with both participants and spectators.
The participants were from Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang, who came dressed in traditional Scottish attire, including kilts and sporrans.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai was invited to grace the event where he also visited the gallery.
He was escorted by SXI board of governors chairman Victor Tan, brother-director of the school Jason Blaikie and Teluk Ewa Port board chairman Jeffrey Chew Gim Eam.
Wong praised the school for its dedication and commitment to showcasing the best of Penang to the world.
The winners of each category took home certificates while top victors bagged attractive prizes.
Kuala Lumpur’s Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band (Malaysian Sikh Band) took pole position in the overall Open ‘A’ MSR (4x4x4) and Open ‘A’ Medley; while solo participant Saxon Coffey won first place in the Solo Piping (18 years and under). – June 12, 2024.
