FREDDIE Aguilar, the iconic Filipino folk singer whose poignant hit “Anak” continues to resonate in live entertainment venues across Malaysia and the ASEAN region, has died at the age of 72.
According to reports from Filipino media, Aguilar passed away at around 1am today at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City. The cause of death is believed to be cardiac arrest.
Aguilar, a Muslim, had performed extensively in Malaysia and was revered for his soulful musical style, which struck a deep chord with audiences in Southeast Asia.
His most celebrated work, “Anak”, released 47 years ago in the Philippines, became an anthem for generations born in the 1970s and 1980s and remains a mainstay in the region’s live music scene.
The Isabela province native was hailed as one of the pillars of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and had a significant influence on the Pinoy rock movement.
“Anak” reportedly sold 33 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling Philippine record of all time. It also holds the unique distinction of being the only Filipino song translated into 51 languages.
Previously, Aguilar was appointed as Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts by former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
Aguilar’s passing marks the end of an era, but his voice and message will continue to echo through his music. - May 27, 2025.
