KUALA LUMPUR - SP Balasubrahmanyam, known to have recorded over 40,000 songs in a glittering  50 year career passed away due to breathing complications after recovering from Covid-19.

It was reported that SP Bala, as he is commonly known contracted a mild case of Covid-19 on the first week of August. However, on August 13, the veteran musician started experiencing difficulties and required ventilator support.

On September 13, he tested negative for Covid-19 but still required a ventilator.

His son, SP Charan addressed the media today saying: "My father took his last breath at 1.04pm. Thank you everyone for your prayers ..."

SP Bala is a recipient of the Padma Shri Award and a six -time winner of the Indian National Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

Adept at singing in various Indian languages, especially Tamil and Hindi, he was intimate name among lovers of Indian music.

According to the Times of India he holds the Guinness record for singing the highest number of songs, averaging 930 songs a year, or three songs per day.

The newspaper called it “the most unbeatable record of any singer in the world.”
