THE country's oldest counselling services group - the Befrienders have enlarged their reach by providing in-person counselling services, besides consolidating its services on social media and basic telephone chats.

For those who need someone to talk to, Befrienders now offers various services with the hope that it can reach out more to those in need.

At its annual general meeting this year, Befrienders released helplines and other services, including face-to- face sessions.

Their telephone Helpline – 04 2910100 operates from 3 pm to midnight with a confidential listening service available every day.

Mental health is a significant and growing concern in Malaysia, with surveys indicating that one in three adults is at risk of developing mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety.

Rates of suicide ideation among adolescents have increased significantly, and mental illness is a top cause of disability.

The 2022 National Health Morbidity Survey showed that one in four adolescents is battling depression, with a high prevalence of suicidal ideation.

Penang Befrienders patron Tan Lean Kee said that the unwavering commitment of the support group to provide confidential care is not only admirable but profoundly necessary in today’s society.

Tan, who is also the wife of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, described the organisation’s volunteers as its backbone.

Tan also paid tribute to the late Datuk Seri Khoo Keat Siew, a pillar in society here for bringing the organisation to the shores of Penang in 1978.

“Khoo's belief that even a single conversation can save a life remains the heartbeat of our organisation and at the forefront of emotional care,” she said.

She also encouraged volunteers to continue nurturing understanding, reducing stigma and fostering a culture where seeking help is embraced with courage and dignity.

“Together, we are more than an organisation; we are a family bound by empathy and driven by hope. Let us foster a culture of care not only for those we serve but also for one another. Sustainable service begins with looking after our members and supporting our leaders,” she said.

State executive councillor Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, who oversees public health affairs, said that there is a need for society to come together to address the mental torture that some segments are enduring daily.

In 2024, Gooi established the Penang Mental Health Committee to better coordinate efforts with civil societies, including Befrienders to promote community awareness and strengthen mental health initiatives across schools and sports. - April 13, 2026.
