COLLABORATIONS between media practitioners from various countries must be strengthened to ensure accurate and balanced reports are delivered to the public, thus tackling the spread of false information.

Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, said that cross-border media professional networks are important in facing the challenges of the increasingly complex global media landscape and the rapid flow of information.

He said that through sharing knowledge, best practices and common understanding, the media community can play a more effective role in promoting journalism based on truth, integrity and responsibility.

“Collaboration among media professionals across countries is equally important. Through sharing knowledge, best practices and common understanding, the media community can help promote accurate and balanced reporting.

“It also plays a role in combating the spread of false information and contributing to regional peace, stability and prosperity,” he said at the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2026 Dinner last night.

Also present were the Yang Dipertua Negeri Pulau Pinang, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and the Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow.

Fahmi added that the HAWANA celebration is not just a platform to appreciate the contributions of media practitioners, but also a field to strengthen relationships and strengthen cooperation among local and international media professionals.

“Recognition of the role of the media as a strategic partner in the country’s development must continue to ensure that the journalism profession continues to be empowered in facing the challenges of the digital era,” he said.

The highlight of the celebration themed “Media with Integrity, Credibility at the Core” will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the HAWANA 2026 Summit at the Convention Centre PICCA@Butterworth Arena today.

Chow, meanwhile, said the state was proud to play host to the event, citing that the media fraternity is a strategic partner in nation-building.

It is also a challenge for media practitioners to deliver accurate, transparent and inclusive facts to the masses and market segments that they cater to.

"We celebrate our media comrades. We welcome the media practitioners from throughout the country and the Asean region in conjunction with this year's HAWANA edition," said Chow.

He said that the emergence of new technologies and social media, as well as the arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI), demands that journalists become professional in playing their role in ensuring good journalism practises.

He also urged all to play a role in counteracting fake news. – June 20, 2026
