UMW Toyota has kicked off 2021 with the launch of two family friendly vehicles that come with features that will worry the competition.

Meet the all-new 2021 Toyota Fortuner SUV, now in showrooms with the 2.8 VRZ 4x4 Automatic diesel going for RM203,183 and the 2.7 SRZ 4x4 Automatic petrol having a RM172,244 sticker price.

UMW Toyota Motor, the sole authorised importer and distributor of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, announced the introduction of the new Fortuner alongside the new family friendly Innova yesterday.

Both vehicles were a part of the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicles project (referred to as the ‘IMV Project’) and shared many parts and systems.

This Fortuner 2.8 VRZ comes with Quad LED headlamps with a new dynamic design housing that flanks a mesh-type front grille.

The foglamp, turn signal and position lamps have also been restyled while the front and rear bumpers have a new design.

The Skid Plate below the front end is also new, emphasising the ruggedness of the Fortuner.

The Fortuner 2.8 VRZ interior, which has 3 rows of seats, is trimmed with a new design and colour while the seat upholstery also has a new colour and design.

The new instrument panel features a revised Multi Information Display (MID) opening animation.

Ambient illumination is provided to add a touch of class at night, while the key cover has been redesigned.

The instrument panel for the Fortuner 2.7 SRZ has been redesigned, the MID has additional information for the driver. This variant also gets a new interior trim colour and new seat upholstery colour.

For added comfort and convenience, this Fortuner 2.8 VRZ and 2.7 SRZ have been fitted with LED Interior Lamps, Electrochromic Rearview Mirror (to eliminate dazzle) and the front passenger can now easily adjust the seat with powered controls at the side.

This Fortuner comes with comprehensive safety equipment in line with Toyota’s efforts to reduce road accidents, the 2.8 VRZ also comes with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS).

This is an integrated suite of active safety systems which make use of a camera and radar to monitor and detect other vehicles, and to take appropriate action to prevent an accident.

TSS, though available in many Toyota models today, has different elements and for the latest Fortuner, it comes with Pre-collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and Yaw Assist Function.

PCS operates in all lighting conditions at speeds from 10 km/h to 180 km/h.

The system detects other vehicles ahead with the millimetre-wave radar sensor in the grille and analyses the imagery captured by the camera on the top of the windscreen.

When a vehicle is detected in close range, warnings are given and the system will provide additional braking assistance when action is taken by the driver.

If the driver does not act and a collision is likely to occur, automatic braking will commence at full pressure to stop the car.

In many cases, an accident can be prevented but if it cannot, the early braking will reduce the vehicle speed and can help to reduce damage from the impact.

LDA is useful in preventing accidents when a driver may be drowsy or loses concentration and the vehicle starts to stray from the lane.

When the system detects this happening (eg moving out of the lane or crossing over an uncurbed road edge without activating the turn signal), the driver will be alerted through the MID by a blinking indicator lamp and buzzer sound.

Unlike the TSS in passenger vehicles, the system in the Fortuner (as well as Hilux) has a Yaw Assist Function. This activates when lane departure is detected and additional braking force applied to the inner wheels to direct the vehicle back into the proper lane position.

DRCC is a more advanced type of cruise control which ensures that there is a safe gap with the vehicle ahead.

What’s New With This Innova

This Toyota Innova has been a middle class family favourite people carrier for many years, however the competition have brought MPVs with better features and drive dynamics in the last few years and so a much needed facelift is necessary to keep interest in the Innova alive.

For 2021, this Innova will continue to be offered in three variants as before, namely the 2.0E (RM111,622), 2.0G (RM121,483) and 2.0X (RM129,677). Prices mentioned include the SST exemption that has been extended until June 30, 2021.

The Innova 2.0X comes with exclusive styling enhancements such as new wheel arch mouldings for protecting the bodywork, new body-side mouldings and redesigned side skirts that add a sporty touch.

While the lightweight 17-inch alloy rims of the Innova 2.0X are now in Dark Mica Metallic instead of black, those on the Innova 2.0G get a more dynamic new design.

At the rear, the garnish on the back door has been restyled, while the roof spoiler (only for the Innova 2.0X) has been reprofiled for aerodynamic improvements.

The large and bright 9-inch capacitive touchscreen for the infotainment system also serves as a display for the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), which is now standard for the Innova 2.0X and Innova 2.0G.

The PVM display has been changed from a 2D view to a 3D view to provide the driver with a better perspective of the vehicle and its surroundings for more precise manoeuvring in tight spaces.

Responding to customer feedback, more charging ports have been added. The front 2 USB ports have been repositioned in the dashboard from the centre console and an additional USB port has been provided for those in the third row of seats.

All the ports have Fast Charging capability for compatible smartphones and other portable devices.

Additionally, a wireless charging pad located in the centre console is also available as an option which can be included at the time of booking.

The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) systems which can help prevent collisions with other vehicles are now standard for the Innova 20X and Innova 2.0G.

BSM continuously scans the blind zone towards the rear side of the vehicle, alerting the driver of a vehicle nearby.

RCTA is useful when reversing out of a parking back as it can detect vehicles approaching from either side and alert the driver of a dangerous situation.

The entire Innova range qualifies for the maximum 5-star Asean NCAP rating. All variants are fitted with 7 SRS airbags and every one of the occupants on 3rd rows has a 3-point auto retracting seat belt.

All variants have ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), as well as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRC), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC).

As with most of the models offered by UMWT, there is a 5-year warranty with unlimited mileage for both these vehicles subject to terms and conditions stated in the owner’s handbook. – The Vibes, January 6, 2021
