THIS is a vehicle that many middle class Malaysians have been waiting for since its first showing in Indonesia at the Gaikando Motor Show in 2017. In early 2020 it was launched in Thailand and Vietnam with huge success and soon after in November 2020, Malaysians got this Asean bestseller.

The Mitsubishi Xpander was initially imported from its factory in Indonesia and now it is locally-assembled via Hicom Automotive Manufacturers in Pekan, Pahang. By April 2021 the bookings for the Xpander had reached an impressive 9,300 plus units due to its price and cabin versatility.

So why is this Mitsubishi Xpander selling so well in Asean and also Malaysia? Well, to start it has a selling price of RM91,369 which puts it lower than its immediate rival, the Honda BR-V which is priced at RM93,693.00 and is a little smaller. Then there is the 2021 facelifted Toyota Innova which is priced from RM111,622 and the Nissan Serena which is priced RM127,874.

Next comes the Xpander looks

Fresh, exciting and modern, the Xpander follows the iteration of the Mitsubishi design language of ‘Dynamic Shield’ which expresses a very aggressive stance for pedestrians and other road users.

Aesthetically, the Xpander comes with a few impressive equipment lists including LED Headlamps, Crystal blocks LED position lamp and L-illumination LED Tail Lights. This Xpander also comes with 16 inch dual-tone alloy wheels. Drivers are able to visit their dusun if need be and other slightly rough places as the Xpander’s high ground clearance is 205mm.

It offers best-in-class space with an overall height of 1,730mm and overall length of 4,475mm. The Xpander is with a 2,775mm wheelbase and 1,750mm width offering more legroom for all its passengers.

The Xpander is the only vehicle in its class with full fold-flat second and third row seats providing full luggage space and a car-like boot that makes it easier to load larger or longer items. The Xpander is also fitted with under-seat multi-purpose storage, cargo floor box with lid, third row side pocket and cup holder, center console box with sliding lid, multiple storage compartments and glove box with double compartment to store all the items needed for a perfect weekend getaway.

Furthermore, the Xpander also comes with four roof-mounted air vents for better air distribution towards each passenger promising faster cooling effect for hot days. For entertainment, the Xpander comes with a 9-Inch Audio System with Apple Carplay and Android Auto Ready.

Safety features

Xpander safety starts with dual SRS airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distributor (EBD), Active Stability Control (ASC), Brake Assist System (BA) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). The Xpander safety standards satisfy ASEAN standards with its proprietary RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) monocoque body structure. Safety features includes dual SRS airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distributor (EBD), Active Stability Control (ASC), Brake Assist System (BA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Rest Reminder, Brake Override System (BOS) among others.

It is easy to get in and out of this Xpander with its slightly raised height and wide front seats. The driver gets keyless ignition and a 9-Inch Audio System, which is Apple Carplay and Android Auto ready so entertainment is all looked after.

This 7-seat MPV is powered by a 1.5L, 105PS petrol engine. This means, when you are alone in the Xpander you will get good fuel consumption and sensible power delivery as this is a family vehicle. With a full load of passengers and luggage, fuel economy reduces and yes, this is not a vehicle for speeding or taking fast corners. It is a sensible family and lifestyle vehicle. Yes, with all rear seats folded, you can also get a pair of bicycles inside.

City commuting will be more than adequate and if you need to visit a hilltop resort with a full load of passengers, the 1.5L DOHC MIVEC engine will work harder but it will not give up or disappoint you.

If you take an interstate trip, rear second and third row passengers get their own air-conditioning vents and climate control for comfort for 5 passengers at the rear is provided. The simple 4-speed gearbox ensures reliability and this is what buyers in this segment want and not fancy technology that is not reliable for day to day use.

Yes, there are so many options in this price range, beyond the MPV, like new sedans and crossovers. However, if you really need a proper 7 seat people mover with good comfort and high reliability, RM91k does not sound like a lot.

Priced at RM91,000, the Xpander is very competitive with other vehicles of its type. - Pic courtesy of Daniel Fernandez
