GEORGE TOWN – It has been a tough two years for writers in Malaysia as they strive to get a steady income while trying to balance the high costs involved in publishing. But for those who want to share their woes and learn from the pros, the Malaysian Writers Society (MWS) is running a virtual fest named #MYWritersFest to commune with local writers and up-and-coming ones on one platform.

MWS president Anna Tan Shuh Ping told The Vibes that since the festival’s beginnings in 2015, there has been a gathering of more and more writers into the community.

“I think one of the things we want to emphasise in the fest is that whilst writing is often solitary, the journey to publication itself involves many people.

“And often other writers – and those in the publishing industry – are your greatest allies, whether through encouraging you in your work or sharing opportunities and open markets or just showing you the ropes.

“This is why we've set up the Free-for-All Meet 'n' Greet that is open to the public as well as the Sesi Mengopi for Malaysian Writers Society members.

“We want to encourage those who are just starting out to join us, meet other writers, form friendships and ask questions.”

The original month-long fest where events were held every weekend in different states is going virtual for the first time due to the pandemic. They found that the fest must go on when many members have experienced attending writers' conventions overseas after they were moved online last year.

The fest will be held from October 22 to 24.

“Aspiring writers should not miss the opportunity to join the two writing workshops available. Workshop spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

Apart from workshops commonly held during writing festivals, Anna revealed that there is a session for those aspiring to be game writers.

“Writing for games isn't a thing most people think of when you talk about 'writing'. But so many games nowadays have a strong narrative running through them.

“Panels and talks will cover a wide range of topics including publishing, short stories, poetry, and even games design.” Malaysian authors such as Lilian Li, Kamalia Hasni, Gina Yap Lai Yoong, Ninot Aziz, Malachi Edwin Vethamani, and Zen Cho will be there live or via pre-recorded broadcast.

MWS is also offering scholarships this year. There will be 14 one-day passes for needy writers. Applications close today (October 8). Those interested can apply at https://malaysianwriterssociety.org/mywritersfest/. – The Vibes, October 8, 2021
