EDUCATION Minister Fadhlina Sidek today apologised to the Indian community following a ban on traditional Tamil songs during an event in Penang last week.
She said she took full responsibility for the incident and expressed her deep regret.
“I take this opportunity to apologise to the Indian community, especially those who were hurt by the situation and the technical mistake.
“This is something which should not have happened,” Fadhlina (Nibong Tebal-PH) said when wrapping up the debate for her ministry on Budget 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat.
She said the “Kadavul Valthu” and “Tamil Valthu” hymns would be performed at a Deepavali celebration on November 29 in Penang.
The matter was raised in the Dewan Rakyat today by P. Prabakaran (Batu-PH), R. Yuneswaran (Segamat-Segamat) and R.S.N. Rayer (Jelutong-PH).
They also highlighted the removal of Tamil philosopher and literature icon Thiruvalluvar’s image from the carnival banner.
“There was no intention to sideline any race and the situation should not have happened.
“I assure you such an incident will not happen again,” said Fadhlina.
Prabakaran stood up and praised Fadhlina for her full explanation, while Rayer also thanked the Education Ministry and urged all parties to continue supporting the unity government.
Fadhlina also said that stern action had been taken against the officer responsible for the incident. – The Vibes, November 27, 2023.
