MALAYSIANS were puzzled over the “dress code” at police stations following a recent viral post.

In the post on We Love Bukit Tambun Facebook page, a man named Winson Shim said he found his car window smashed after having dinner at a hawker centre in Bukit Tambun, Penang.

He said he realised several items were missing, including RM800 cash and his wife’s passport. His wife is a China national.

Chinese media reports said the 34-year-old rushed to lodge a report at the Simpang Ampat police station.

However, he said upon arrival at the station, the sentry informed him he should lodge a report at the Tambun police station.

“The sentry told me this after checking with the officers inside.

“I told the sentry it would be easier if I could lodge the report here, but instead, he told me to go home and change into long pants,” he said.

Shim asked if being in long pants was a priority in an emergency.

China Press reported Shim then returned to where his car was parked and searched the area hoping the thief would have thrown away the passport.

At that point, a patrol car drove by and the officer asked him what was going on.

“After I told them what happened, they told me to lodge a report at the Tambun police station.

“To my surprise, there was no issue there and I lodged the report in the same pair of shorts I was wearing earlier.

“The policeman even asked why I was so late in reporting the crime and explained that in an emergency, (police) are flexible on the (dress code),” Shim said.

He thanked policemen at the Tambun police station for their understanding. – The Vibes, December 9, 2023.
