FORMER Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad expressed his frustration with the justice system, claiming political victimisation against him and his family.

In a posting on X, Dr Mahathir said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had accused him of possessing billions of ringgit after he allegedly abused his powers when he was premier.

"I asked Anwar for proof of this statement, but he did not provide any. I then sued him for defamation against me," he said.

“I requested that evidence be produced in court but a year has passed and no evidence has been shown. Finally, the evidence was said to be with Petronas … but Petronas is under Anwar,” he claimed.

Instead, Dr Mahathir said his son was accused and threatened that, if he did anything that the prosecutor considered to be contrary to the accusation, he would be jailed for five years.

"There was not even mention of being brought to court," said Dr Mahathir.

On Jan 18, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission served businessman Mirzan Mahathir a notice to declare his assets, whether inside or outside the country, within 30 days.

MACC said the notice was issued following the "revelations" obtained from the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers.

The investigation is being conducted under the MACC Act 2009 as well as the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA).

Dr Mahathir said there were many more government supporters named in the Pandora Papers but they have never been investigated or charged.

He claimed the names include Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen and Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

“These leaders have not been investigated, let alone charged. There are also a few businessmen such as Lim Kok Thay, Mahmud Bekir, Tiong Hiew King, Larry Low Hock Ping, Datuk Yamani Hafez Tan Sri Musa and the late Tan Sri G Gnanalingam named in the Pandora Paper.

"When they are not in the government, they talk about the tyranny of the authorities, then, when they become government, they behave worse than political foes. If one offers support, they are a friend ...even court trials can be halted. This is Reformasi,” he said. - The Vibes, January 20, 2024
