Continuous rain brings flash floods, relief centres open in Selangor, Negri

TWO relief centres have been opened in Selangor to accommodate flood victims following heavy rain in the state since yesterday, resulting in about 374 people being evacuated.

Flash floods have been reported Rawang, Sg Buloh, Bestari Jaya, Klang and Shah Alam.

Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Selangor assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the centres are at SK Merbau Sempak and the Kuala Selangor District Council Hall (MDKS) Desa Coalfields.

He said these centres will provide shelter for 374 victims from 88 families.

The department had also opened a control post at the PPS at SK Merbau Sempak, he said in a notification via WhatsApp today.

Meanwhile, in Seremban, a relief centre was opened at the Permatang Pasir Community Hall in Port Dickson early today following flash floods in the district.

According to a statement issued by the Negri Sembilan Disaster Management Committee of the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), the PPS was opened at 4.08am and accommodated 46 victims from two families.

“Several rivers recorded readings at alert and dangerous levels as of 7am today, namely Sg Linggi and Sg Triang in Jelebu,” it said. 

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had posted a thunderstorm warning on its official Facebook page at 6.10am today.

It said thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected in Kedah, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

“The same is expected at Negri Sembilan and Sarawak until 9am,” it said. – April 17, 2024.
