Child, teen die after eating food from religious ceremony at school

A TWO-YEAR-OLD girl and a 17-year-old boy died from suspected food poisoning after consuming food that was brought back from a religious ceremony held in a school.

Gombak police chief Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said two reports were lodged yesterday regarding the incident.

“In the first case, the victim, a local male teenager, ate food brought home by his mother after attending a programme at a school last Saturday.

“After eating the food, the victim, his mother and father suffered from diarrhea. On Monday, around 1.30pm, the victim lost consciousness and his father called MERS 999 for help,” he said.

Ariffin said the victim was declared dead by an assistant medical officer from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

“For the second case involving a two-year-old girl, the father, who works as a security guard, brought the food home after completing a programme at the same school before giving it to the victim on Saturday.

“Yesterday, at around 10.45am, the girl had a fever, vomited and had diarrhea. The girl’s mother immediately took the victim to Selayang Hospital.

“However, the victim was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

Noor Ariffin said the bodies of the two victims were sent to Selayang Hospital for postmortem.

“Both cases have been classified as sudden death reports.

“Those with information can come forward to help with the investigation,” he said. – June 11, 2024.
