FUNDS are slowly trickling in for Sungai Buloh residents who have started crowdfunding to pay for legal costs to save a community park.

Bukit Rahman Putra representative Lam Kin Tong said to date they had collected RM2,460 on the gogetfunding.com platform.

The fundraising drive started on June 13 and is expected to continue until the end of July.

“Our target is to reach RM30,000 to replenish our legal funds. So far, the residents have spent about RM50,000 of their own money to pay for the legal costs,” Lam told The Vibes.

The residents started legal action last year against the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) for allowing the expansion of a service road that would encroach on their community park.

Lam said the residents had raised 70% of the legal fees and hoped to get the balance through a crowdsourcing initiative.

“This collection is only for our initial legal action fees. We are unsure how long this (court) process will take. If it (the case) keeps dragging on, the fees will go up.”

The residents said the Shah Alam High Court had heard the application by MPS to strike out a judicial review on June 24.

“On August 15, the court will deliver a decision on the striking out application,” they added.

Last year, then-MPS president Dato’ Mohd Yazid Sairi said the road expansion project must proceed as it would ease traffic congestion in the area.

“We are aware of the residents’ objections, but MPS must also take into account those who want the project to go ahead because of the current traffic situation,” he said.

Sungai Buloh residents strongly oppose plans by a developer to widen Jalan BRP7/2, which will destroy part of the community park to enable access to a new development site.

The residents say about 59 trees have been marked for felling.

Yazid, however, said 48 trees would be cut down and at least 96 trees of different species would be planted there.
