PENANG DAP has refuted claims by Umno veterans’ club secretary Mustapha Yaakub that former did not reach out to the Chinese voters during the Sungai Bakap by-election, which Perikatan Nasional (PN) won by an over 4,000 majority.

All components of the national unity government worked tirelessly throughout the 14-day campaign and gave strong support to the Pakatan Harapan candidate Joohari Ariffin, said state DAP organising secretary Jason H’ng Mooi Lye.

“We need to accept and respect the decision by voters and continue to bring changes to convince the people and not make wild accusations and pinpoint or blame anyone,” said H’ng.

The wave of changes (reforms) that is being advanced by the unity government, is said to be difficult to adopt, and it led to an erosion of confidence towards the government, said H’ng in a statement.

However, the unity government will double its efforts to reach out to the people so they can feel the changes brought by the government, he added.

“The national unity government will double its efforts and listen to the grassroot voices to improve on its delivery system to regain the confidence and support of the people,” said H’ng.

Malays make up 59.2% of voters in the state seat, while Chinese voters comprised 22.4% and Indians (17.2%) and others (1.2%). – July 8, 2024.
