PENANG was rocked by another tragic crime of passion when a 16-year-old girl fell from the 16th floor of a condominium in George Town after allegedly quarrelling with her boyfriend.

The incident happened in the pre - dawn hours and it came just 72 - hours after a woman and her father were allegedly stabbed to death in Air Itam by a man said to have been rejected by the woman.

The girl  was apparently heartbroken following the quarrel.

Northeast district police acting head Lee Swee Sake informed the media that police had ruled out foul play.

However, investigations will continue to determine how the victim was found sprawled on the ground floor of the high rise block, he said.

On Thursday, a man stabbed to his death a 30 - year old woman and her 62 - year old father at the lobby area of an apartment unit in Farlim, Air Itam.

The 32 - year old man later slit his throat and stabbed himself but survived, and is now warded at the Penang Hospital.

The man has since been remanded by the police to facilitate the investigations which are framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for first degree murder.

If found guilty, the man can be sentenced to a life imprisonment under the country's criminal code laws.

Meanwhile, counsellor Synthia Surin, a trained hypnotherapist, has urged families and support groups such as teachers and community leaders to step up the campaign to generate awareness on fighting depression.

"There is also a need to be conscious of the tell-tale signs of severe depression and it should not be ignored," Surin said. - November 10, 2024.
