SABAH is gearing up to diversify its tourism offerings with the construction of an RM100 million Cultural Complex in Kinarut, near Papar.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor described the project as a major step in leveraging the state’s natural and cultural resources with Sabah aiming to position itself as a premier destination for immersive cultural experiences.
“This significant investment will allow us to create new and innovative attractions while enhancing existing ones,” Hajiji said during the groundbreaking ceremony of the complex in Papar.
Hajiji linked the initiative to the national Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign, underscoring the need for Sabah to prepare for an expected increase in tourist arrivals.
Describing the complex as a milestone in preserving and celebrating Sabah’s heritage, Hajiji called on community leaders, NGOs, and stakeholders to support the initiative.
“With this investment, we are reaffirming our commitment to making Sabah a leading destination known for its unique heritage and vibrant culture,” he said.
According to Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, the cultural complex, is set to feature a Cultural Village and Cultural Centre.
It will serve as a hub for showcasing the ethnic diversity of Sabah’s 35 ethnic groups and over 200 sub-ethnic communities, with Liew envisioned the new facility could draw for both domestic and international tourists.
“This investment will not only enhance tourism offerings but also create jobs and opportunities for local communities to benefit directly from the industry,” she said.
The complex will be a two-story structure capable of accommodating up to 3,000 people, with multi-purpose spaces for events, gatherings and ceremonies.
Additionally, restaurants, outdoor landscaped areas, a lake and parking for 1,000 vehicles would also be built, Liew added.
“Construction will be carried out in phases, ensuring some facilities would be available for use before the entire project is completed,” she said. - January 26, 2025
