THE Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department has issued another red alert warning of yet another possible round of floods.

The warning issued today is especially meant for 26 districts throughout the state.

The districts are Kuching, Bau, Lundu, Serian, Siburan, Samarahan, Asajaya, Simunjan, Sri Aman, Betong, Saratok (all in southern Sarawak), Julau, Meradong, Pakan, Sarikei, Sibu, Selangau, Kanowit, Tanjung Manis, Dalat, Daro, Matu, Mukah (all in central Sarawak), Bintulu, Tatau and Sebauh (all in northern Sarawak).

"We (the department) are warning residents to be alert as there are warnings of torrential rain over the next few days that may result in more floods.

"We will continuously monitor the riverine and coastal regions and updates will be issued as necessary.

"Residents in low-lying and riverine settlements and coastal areas must remain vigilant to our updates," the department said.

Sarawak is already being battered by  torrential rain, massive floods and landslides since 10 days ago as the landas season (equivalent of the monsoon) is at its peak.

There are still about 6,000 flood victims housed in evacuation centres statewide. – February 6, 2025
