A 53-year-old homeless man has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of a female food vendor whose body was discovered near the Kuantan River, close to the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge recently.

The suspect was detained early this morning in Kuala Terengganu following a raid at a house in Kampung Wakaf Tembesu Gong Badak around 5:30 am, Buletin TV3 reported.

According to Kuantan District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu, the arrest was made following public tip-offs.

The house where the suspect was apprehended is believed to be a relative’s residence. Items seized during the raid included a ring, cash, clothing, and documents, all of which will aid in the investigation.

Sinar Harian cited today that the victim, Norshamira Zainal, 37, was reported missing after she went to deliver a COD (cash on delivery) order of crispy anchovy sambal to the suspect on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 12.

Her body was found by the river on February 13 with signs of foul play.

Police have since applied for a seven-day remand order for the suspect, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Authorities are still working to determine the motive behind the crime. – February 16, 2025
